Inspiring High School Girls to Become Change Makers in Business, Tech, and Beyond

Oakland Natives

In 2019, ONGB set out to address gender inequality in educational and professional settings. Thus, The Girls Equity Movement and the GEMs program was born.

GEMs aims to catalyze change by equipping young women with the networking, training, and leadership skills they need to change the world. The entrepreneurship training program provides career mentorship, exposure to technology & coding, one-on-one life coaching and more. GEMs inspires high school girls to be self-assured, college-bound, and career-focused. “The GEMs program shows you how to be true to yourself and commit… I chose GEMs because I got to grow my entrepreneurial skills and grow to who I am today.” – Onyinyechi Onyema, 9th Grade, GEMs Cohort 3

Participants in the GEMs program are raising the bar in their communities. 100% of seniors graduated from high school in areas where the graduation rate is roughly 68%. All seniors applied to college and 75% were accepted into their first choice. In addition, 100% of seniors who took the SAT improved their test score by 75 points on average.

Applications for the GEMs for the 2022 Cohort are currently open. It is safe to say that we’re all excited for what this year’s program will bring for a new generation of young leaders.
