Oakland Natives Give Back Fund, Inc.

Established in 2008, Oakland Natives Give Back is a 21st Century community-based philanthropic hub that invests its resources in audacious, high impact initiatives.

What We Do

Give- Solving the challenges of today requires that funders have the willingness to take risks and humility to seek the perspectives of those who face those challenges daily.

Learn- With a keen focus on fighting chronic absenteeism, we are driven by a strong commitment to community grounded action research, which leads to progressive ideas and bold solutions like using cash grants to incentivize daily attendance.

Empower- ONGB founders are three fierce Black women who ALL dropped out of high school, yet they overcame seemingly insurmountable odds to achieve success.  After over a decade of work geared toward increasing the graduation rates, it seemed natural to support the development and advancement of girls.

WHY WE DO IT

OUR CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE- WE CANNOT FAIL THEM

When students drop out of high school the outcome is associated with poorer lifelong health, lower lifetime earning potential, and an increased risk of incarceration. Students without a high school diploma are eight times more likely to be incarcerated at some point in their lives and earn $1M less over their lifetime.

We focus on CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM because it  is oftentimes a hidden data point that can serve as a powerful first indicator of a student’s risk for moving off the path to graduation.

Fighting chronic absenteeism is the first line of defense in dropout prevention. We see ourselves as on the frontlines of this work.
